The Story

Experience one of Macon’s finest historic treasures: the Johnston-Felton-Hay House. Known as the “Palace of the South,” this landmark is among Georgia’s most iconic structures. Completed in 1859, the Italian Renaissance Revival mansion reflects an era of innovation and grandeur. Its 18,000 square feet feature art, stained glass, gilded cornices, and ornate finishes. Ahead of its time, the home included indoor plumbing, central heat, gas lighting, a ventilation system, and a 15-tube intercom.

For over a century, it was home to the Johnston-Felton and Hay families before becoming a museum in 1964. Named a National Historic Landmark in 1971 and later entrusted to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, Hay House continues to honor its rich past. Today it serves as both a museum and rental venue, with ongoing restoration preserving its charm. Visit HayHouseMacon.org to schedule your tour and experience this Southern treasure.
