The Story

Discover Macon’s connections history at Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, ancestral homeland of the Muscogee (Creek) people. Spanning over 10,000 years, the site highlights the Mississippian Moundbuilder era with earthworks nearly a thousand years old. The Visitor Center features exhibits, a short film, trail info, and a store for keepsakes. Seven earthen mounds and miles of trails wind through fields, forests, and wetlands rich with wildlife.

Explore the reconstructed Earth Lodge with its original clay floor and birdshaped platform where leaders once met. Climb the Great Temple Mound for views across the landscape and toward downtown Macon. Annual programs like Lantern Light Tours during the Cherry Blossom Festival and the Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration each fall bring the site’s heritage to life. With no admission fee, Ocmulgee Mounds remains one of Macon’s treasures today!
