One of the great natural resources of our area is Phinizy Swamp.
Previously inaccessible to most of the population, it is now a
thriving nature park and research center. Phinizy Center for
Water Sciences is a local nonprofit that provides a critical water
quality research facility, environmental education for all ages,
and a natural place to inspire environmental stewardship.
At Phinizy Center’s Nature Park, visitors can connect with
nature 365 days a year without an admission fee. Field
trips, guided hikes, bike rides, and other events provide
the community with opportunities to learn more about the
importance and beauty of our wetlands.
Work at Phinizy Center’s research facility encompasses river basin ecology, restoration
ecology, and water quality research. Their cutting-edge laboratory analyses, longterm Savannah River water quality monitoring, and studies on the ecological health
of wetland systems are critical to our community. Freshwater systems are significant
sources of plant and animal habitat, recreational opportunities, drivers of nutrient
transport, and vital providers of drinking water and industrial water. Check out their
website for more information!
