Overlooking the Savannah River in historic
downtown Augusta stands the Morris Museum of
Art. This is the first museum in the country dedicated
to the art and artists of the American South. Noted for its multifaceted permanent
collection, diverse and continually rotating exhibitions and extensive outreach
and in-house programs, the Morris Museum is dedicated to the interpretation of
Southern art in all its forms and the preservation of the region’s rich visual culture.
From nineteenth-century portraits to contemporary studio art glass, the Morris
Museum boasts a collection of nearly six thousand works. Paintings, sculptures,
prints, drawings, and photographs are arranged in ten thematic galleries. In
addition, the Morris hosts more than twelve special exhibitions annually and
a wide array of events—artist talks, gallery tours, family programs, and book
signings—and offers outreach throughout the community.
