Father and son duo, Brad and Havird Usry, are known for
their soul food and top notch catering. But they are just as
well known for their dedication to healthy living. For years,
the two envisioned opening a local fast food restaurant that
served gourmet salads, grain bowls, and fresh smoothies—
a concept they could see a demand for in burgeoning downtown
Augusta. Fast forward to 2018, and The Southern Salad, also
known as SoSal, opened on Broad Street under the management of Chef Havird and
another Augusta local, Chef Jeremy Miller.
The restaurant uses farm-to-table sources, growing its own Clean Greens using
hydroponic farming. SoSal is known for its friendly service, fresh, seasonal gourmet
menu and healthy snack options. The posh restaurant is also a vibrant and supportive
community hub: they promote sustainability and stewardship; and they actively
engage in local health-focused organizations, like Paceline and Augusta Locally
Grown. SoSal also offers catered dining options and a venue for private events.
And while the interior is beautiful, nothing beats enjoying the laid-back atmosphere
of their covered back patio and the Ellis Street Garden.
